Mission & Core Focus
SiSTEM UK is a volunteer-led organization dedicated to increasing the representation and retention of Black and Mixed heritage women in STEM through a community-driven, feedback-based approach. While currently operating with informal governance, the organization is prioritizing the formalization of its systems and infrastructure to support its long-term growth and impact.
Initiative Key Achievement
Over the past six months, SiSTEM UK has supported over 100 Black researchers, primarily at postgraduate and early career stages, through networking, training, mentoring, and events such as the Beyond Medicine conference and Brunch of PhDs. The organisation has collaborated with partners including Canon, Enginuity, Black PhD Collective, University of Surrey, Loughborough University, University of West London, and BiosciToolkit. Its flagship event, Brunch of SiSTEM, has become a significant annual gathering, fostering confidence, community, and progression among Black women in STEM. SiSTEM UK’s impact is evidenced by testimonials and the progression of interns into PhD programmes and professional roles, as well as its role in building a mutually supportive network for Black researchers.
